AIM-7 "Sparrow"

The Sparrow is a radar-guided, medium-range, air-to-air missile that has been in U.S. service for more than 30 years. The Sparrow uses semiactive radar-homing guidance. The Sparrow is a missile on the way out, being replaced by the much improved AIM-120 AMRAAM. The AIM-7 has a rather poor reputation, gained from its poor record in actual combat. In engagements against Libyan aircraft in 1981 and 1989, all well within the missile's range, five out of six missed their target. And in 1987, when an Iranian F-4 was fired upon, one of the missile's motor failed to fire. Still, the Sparrow downed 23 Iraqi planes, 69% of all Iraqi aircraft losses in the Gulf war. The missile first entered service with the U.S. in 1958.
